BACKGROUND
This commemorative collectible captures the moment Edith Younger Edmunds propelled onto the national stage with her A Life in Stitches presentation at Sharswood Plantation in Gretna, Virginia on Juneteenth, 2025.
This occasion marked the birth of Granny Grupe found within the pages of Secret Stitches: An Underground Railroad Activity Book for Children and Adults.
It was this image captured by her daughter which was published by National Public Radio (NPR) for reporter Vanessa Romo's article titled "On Juneteenth, she celebrates the role quilts may have played in Underground Railroad."
ATTIRE
On that day, Edmunds wore Afrocentric attire for the first time. She wore a wrap gifted by her granddaughter. Her skirt was handmade by her niece. Her signature red glasses were her own. Her cypress cane was crafted by renowned Gullah artist Thomas Williams of Pawley's Island, South Carolina. But the centerpiece of her presentation was Edmunds' iconic wall hanger showcasing the ten primary guilt squares of the Underground Railroad. It serves as Secret Stitches cover photograph. And, each square is singularly featured within the text.
